From the owners Peter and Catherine…
I remember how moved my wife and I were after reading an article about a man in Haiti, who would make wonderful pieces of art from recycled 55 gallon steel drums. Living in poverty with no chance to finish his formal education, he served as an apprentice for five years. Fifteen years later, running his own shop, butterflies float and flowers burst forth from his unique style of art, and he takes comfort knowing he is able to support his wife, mother and daughters. Despite losing his house in the devastating 2010 earthquake, his dreams survive and continue to flourish thanks to Fair Trade.
The story really hit home and we knew we wanted to do something that would make a difference. Having customer service and sales backgrounds, we decided to open a Fair Trade gift shop, and Venice Trading Company was born. Since our opening day, “going to work” has taken on a new meaning. Almost daily we meet someone who has a personal story to share about what Fair Trade means to them. Just as frequently we meet someone who is hearing about Fair Trade for the first time, and it makes us think about that story we read so long ago. Our retail shop is located in the historic downtown shopping district of Venice, a small beach town on the Gulf Coast of Florida. I’m Peter and my wife is Catherine, if you’re ever in the area stop in, we would love to meet you and share stories.
