Island Village (a 501c3 non-profit corporation) is a tuition-free public charter school for students in grades K-8 located on two campuses in Venice and Sarasota, Florida. We offer affordable early childhood programs as well. Based on the constructivist philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori, IVMS is a safe and stimulating place to learn, incorporating today’s technology in a nurturing environment where every student is celebrated as an individual and encouraged to reach their fullest potential.
Our Vision – Today’s School For Tomorrow’s World™
In 2001, Island Village Montessori Charter School opened its doors with 175 elementary and 35 pre-kindergarten students. In 2018-19, over 660 students attend Island Village. Island Village has earned the status of “high-performing charter school” by the Florida Department of Education since its inception in 2011.
The original mission of Island Village was to provide the opportunity for a Montessori education to all students no matter their socioeconomic status. The mission was also to prepare students for the 21st Century workplace through a balance of traditional Montessori methodology and a contemporary technology-infused curriculum. Nearly two decades later, these ideals still form our primary purpose and mission. We have learned some valuable lessons over the past years about balancing a Montessori vision with a standards-based model of instruction. Island Village believes in preparing our students for the future by encouraging self-direction and compassion in all academic endeavors.
Island Village – One School, Two Campuses
At Island Village, we believe the path to an exceptional education begins with a focus on each child’s unique spirit. Our students develop the courage to do things differently and the passion to do them well. Our Venice campus serves students from early childhood through 8th grade and our Sarasota campus serves elementary students, kindergarten through 5th grade.
