In 1962, a group of Venice citizens, including author Walter Farley and his wife, Rosemary, formed the Friends of the Venice Library to foster the establishment and long-range support of public library service in Venice. The Friends raised funds for construction, while the City of Venice provided the land and Sarasota County committed operating expenses, and our original Venice Public Library opened in 1965. The Friends have actively supported the library as advocates and fundraisers. We’ve helped fund expansions, capital improvements, equipment, furnishings, office materials, and educational public outreach programs for people of all ages.
In 2018, the Friends once again partnered with Sarasota County and the City of Venice, Florida so that a truly exceptional new library was built. There is still more to be done to make our new William H. Jervey, Jr. Venice Public Library all that it can be for our community.
There are many volunteer positions available in all Sarasota County Libraries. Inquire about possible openings for the following: Clerk, Shelving, Homebound Delivery, Book Appraisal, Book Donation Transport Circulation: Technology Assistants, Check In, Book Repair, Shelvers, Processing, Reserves.
