We have seen the community come together, yet again, to help those in need after the devastation of Hurricane Ian. In historic downtown Venice, we saw the catastrophic losses to some of our iconic buildings and beautiful landscapes, but were fortunate to see the majority of buildings weather the storm well and businesses reopening quickly. Before even our local grocers were open, restaurants and food vendors sprang open to help feed residents without power and a means to get or cook food.

Sarasota County Government and the City of Venice worked tirelessly to clear debris and dangers so business owners could return to their properties and assess damage. As more electricity was restored, businesses have opened and business owners are helping one another with different needs. Encouragement and embraces are felt throughout downtown as stores welcome patrons back.

It is a time like this, that I am reminded why the missions of main street organizations are so important. We specialize in building strong inclusive communities and help revitalize districts by working together with a network of businesses, nonprofits, and community members. We celebrate our character and history; we preserve our local charm through strategic focus on the core principles of economic vitality, design, promotion, and organization.

Our Venice community knows how to support our locals and help businesses survive interruptions, and as your local community-based economic development organization, Venice MainStreet asks you to do so again. As our new normal emerges post-Ian, you can shop local, dine local, share your favorite stores and restaurants in social media posts, and help spread the word about your favorite products or merchandise unique to Venice. Every little bit helps! Donate to one or more of our many local not-for-profit organizations, as they also rely on revenue like businesses and need your support as well. We will emerge stronger and more resilient than ever!
