Venice MainStreet is delighted to announce that Dr. Demian Chapman, Senior Scientist & Director, Center for Shark Research at Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium, is scheduled to speak at the upcoming 2024 Venice Sharks Tooth Festival. Dr. Chapman will be delivering the welcome and opening remarks at 11am on Saturday, April 13th on the festival’s Main Stage in Centennial Park. 

Dr. Demian Chapman joined Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium in May 2021 as a Senior Scientist in Mote’s Research Division. Dr. Chapman now holds the title of Perry W. Gilbert Chair in Shark Research, as the Director of Sharks and Ray Research and Conservation.

A molecular ecologist by training, he leads the Global FinPrint project and studies the global trade in shark fins and meat. He has published more than 100 scientific papers and appeared on BBC and the Discovery Channel, the Ellen Show, the PBS documentary Changing Seas episode Sharks in Belize: Jaguars of the Sea, and countless more appearances around the world. 

His efforts have contributed to species protection in the form of a shark sanctuary in the Bahamas, improved shark and ray management in Belize, and the listing and implementation of trade restrictions for multiple shark and ray species on the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), to name a few.
